Domains are a means by which certain characteristics and behaviours of a field may be defined for the application.

For example, a field with a domain (seen in IMCD) of DATE will impart that the field is stored in the data base as an Oracle Data Type of DATE, but that it will also have screen characteristics of a date selector and will be formatted using the date formatting built in to the application
